DISASTER PLAN FOR RABBITS

Bun United Nation (B.U.N.) is the concept that rabbit rescuers, rabbit activists, rabbit shelter workers, rabbit veterinarians, rabbit rescue organizations, rabbit sanctuaries, rabbit shelters, and any one else has the best interests of rabbits at heart should form a coalition to advocate for rabbits.  Why should we do this?   There are many reasons.  Consider these issues:

FOR THE SAKE OF THE RABBITS: Rescues and shelters need to stop competing for the same scarce resources such as foster and adoptive homes for rabbits and dollars.  Instead, they need to streamline services to increase cost containment and effectiveness.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE RABBITS:  We need to build a power base to influence the large, national animal organizations to take into consideration the plight of rabbits when setting their priorities and agendas.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE RABBITS:  We need to educate ourselves about how rabbits are used, abused, and killed by agribusiness, back yard and other breeders, the pharmaceutical industry, the cosmetic industry, the fashion industry, the household product industry, the scientific testing industry, and the pet industry.

FOR THE SAKE OF THE RABBITS:  We need to put our values and love of rabbits into constructive action for rabbit protection issues.  That requires the cooperation of all of us and avoiding the duplication of services.

B.U.N. PROJECTS

Probably the best shot that rabbits have at not being food for humans or other companion animals, to not be used for their fur and their fiber, to not be the animal model for vivisectors, and to not be dismissed by almost everybody but rabbit people is to increase the public and animal protectionist communities’ awareness that rabbits are the third most popular companion animal in the USA.  This is according to data from the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. Rabbits are also the third most popular companion animal in Great Britain according to a 2007 report by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).  They are popular and expensive to obtain in Japan also.  To that end, it is up to us to be the public relations specialists for rabbits.  These projects are designed to do just that:  to get rabbits in to the public mind as pets.  Please implement them at every opportunity.  And when you have an idea about a new project to meet our goals, share it and we’ll post it on this page.
